Frequently Asked Questions
There is no single exact definition of ideal weight; this tool shows two approaches together: (1) the weight range corresponding to a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9), (2) statistical formulas such as Devine and Robinson used in clinical settings (e.g. for medication dosing).
The Devine formula was originally developed to calculate medication dosing: for men it is
50 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60) kg, for women 45.5 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60) kg. Below about 152 cm this difference could go negative, so it is treated as 0.The Robinson formula is a 1983 update to the Devine formula: for men
52 + 1.9 × (height_in − 60) kg, for women 49 + 1.7 × (height_in − 60) kg. Because the coefficients differ, results can be slightly different from Devine.No. These formulas are based on general population statistics and don't account for individual differences like muscle mass, bone structure, age or body type. For athletes and people with high muscle mass, results may deviate from their actual healthy weight. This tool is for informational purposes only.
