How Does the Video & Audio Format Converter Work?
This tool opens your file with your browser's built-in media engine (WebCodecs), detects its format and the video/audio tracks it contains, and offers you the valid target formats. Only formats your browser can actually produce are shown; for example, a target won't appear in the list if it requires a video encoder your device doesn't support. When the container is compatible, conversion is a fast "remux" (the codec is copied as-is); when the codec needs to change (e.g. converting to WebM), the file is re-encoded, which can take a bit longer.
The most common uses are changing a video's container to make it compatible with a different device or platform (e.g. MOV to MP4), extracting just the audio from a video file and saving it as MP3 or WAV, or converting an audio file to another audio format (e.g. WAV to MP3). When extracting audio from a video, the video track is automatically discarded — only the audio is encoded and downloaded.
Your files are never uploaded to a server — all decoding, encoding and conversion happens entirely on your own device, inside your browser. That's an important privacy advantage when working with personal video/audio recordings or copyrighted content; your file never touches a third-party server.
