Frequently Asked Questions

Both convert the same profit amount into a percentage, but divide by a different base. Profit margin is profit as a share of the sale price: Margin = Profit / Sale price × 100. Markup is profit as a share of the cost: Markup = Profit / Cost × 100. In the same example (₺80 cost, ₺100 sale price, ₺20 profit) the margin is 20% while the markup is 25% — since the denominators differ, the two are never equal (markup is always larger than margin whenever profit is positive).

Since profit margin is defined relative to the sale price, you divide the cost by (1 − target margin): Sale Price = Cost / (1 − Target Margin / 100). For example, with an ₺80 cost and a 20% margin target, the sale price is 80 / (1 − 0.20) = ₺100. Simply multiplying the cost by the target margin percentage and adding it to the cost (markup logic) gives the WRONG result here — that formula applies to a markup target, not a margin target.

In the profit margin formula (Profit / Sale price × 100), profit is a portion of the sale price and can never exceed it — so the margin can mathematically approach 100% but never reach or pass it (that would mean an infinite sale price or a zero cost). If you target 100% or more, the formula Cost / (1 − Margin/100) produces division by zero or a negative result; in that case consider using markup (Profit/Cost) instead — markup has no upper bound.

The calculator works with a single "cost" figure you enter — it's recommended to include every cost directly tied to the sale (COGS, shipping, packaging, commissions, etc.) in that figure; otherwise your real profit margin may be lower than what's shown here. If you sell on a marketplace, you can also check our Marketplace Commission Calculator, which separately deducts commission/shipping/VAT.
